Going the Extra Step to Get a Code-Required Roof Upgrade Covered

A storm-damaged roof in St. Paris turned into more than a standard insurance claim when we discovered the existing roof decking did not meet current building code requirements.

The sheathing was only 3/8-inch thick and needed to be at least 7/16-inch for the existing 24-inch-on-center framing. Although the homeowner’s policy included code upgrade coverage, the insurance company required documentation of the Ohio code before approving the additional work.

Roofs By Warren went to the local building department, discussed the situation, and obtained the applicable code documentation. We submitted that information along with photos showing the existing decking thickness.

With the additional documentation, the insurance company approved replacement of the roof decking along with the storm-damaged roof. The homeowner was extremely appreciative and later sent us a thoughtful letter thanking us for helping her through the process.

If your home has storm damage, contact Roofs By Warren. We’ll inspect the entire roofing system, document what we find, and help you understand your insurance claim and coverage options.
